Guides / The school year
Spend less on school supplies
Shop your house first, buy basics on sale, and skip the character tax.
School supply lists can be long, but many items are already somewhere in your home. A little planning and patience cuts the bill.
Before you shop
- Gather last year's leftovers: pencils, scissors, rulers, half-used notebooks
- Check the list for brand names and ask if they're required
- Agree a budget with older kids for anything "extra"
While you shop
- Basics like crayons, pencils and notebooks are often cheapest during summer sales
- Plain designs cost less than characters and last longer
- Buy a quality backpack once rather than a cheap one every year
- Share bulk packs with another family
