Guides / Saving for the future
Your family's safety net
An emergency fund, enough life insurance and a named guardian.
Before saving for college, most families benefit from three basics that protect the kids if something goes wrong.
An emergency fund
Aim for at least a few months of essential expenses in an easy-to-reach savings account. Start with a small goal and build from there.
Life insurance
If others depend on your income, life insurance can replace it if you die. Many families find term life insurance, which covers a set number of years, the simplest and most affordable. Check what your employer already provides.
A will and a guardian
A will lets you name who would care for your children. Without one, a court decides. Many states have simple will forms, and legal aid or a lawyer can help.
