Budget for sports, lessons and activities
Count the hidden costs before you sign up.
The sign-up fee is often the smallest part of an activity. Uniforms, equipment, travel and fundraising can double it.
Ask before signing up
- What does the fee include?
- What equipment and uniform will we need?
- How much travel is there, and how far?
- Are there extra fees for tournaments, recitals or photos?
- Is fundraising required?
Keep it manageable
- Set an activity budget per child for the year
- Try one season before buying top equipment
- Buy used gear; kids outgrow it fast
- Ask about scholarships and sibling discounts; many programs offer them quietly
- Look at parks and recreation departments and the YMCA for lower-cost options
